Abstract

AİM: In the study, it was aimed to determine the effect of internet addiction of children/adolescents and changes in body mass indexes due to lack of physical activity on parental stress during the pandemic process.

METHODS: The descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with 539 parents with children aged 7-17 years living in Bitlis, between January 2021 and April 2021. The Descriptive Characteristics Questionnaire was made using the online form consisting of the Family – Child Internet Addiction Scale, and the Parenting Stress Scale, and analyzed with IBM SPSS. Frequency, Student's t test, One Way ANOVA test, Post Hoc Tukey test, Chi-Square test were used for distribution and frequency in the analysis of the study. Significance level was taken as p<0.05.

RESULTS: In the study, 73.8% of the parents were female, 26.2% were male, and 43.6% of the children were between the ages of 13-17. The internet usage time of 41.9% of the children is 1-3 hours; 55.1% of parents emphasized that their children's television watching time and 88.7% their internet usage time increased during the pandemic process. Internet addiction scale mean score was 49.92±12.35, and parent stress scale total score was 25.33±7.19. It was determined that there was a significant increase in the body mass index of children during the pandemic process.

CONCLUSION: The increase in internet use, screen time and body mass indexes in children during the epidemic caused an increase in internet addiction and parental stress in children. The increasing responsibilities of parents during the pandemic process have negatively affected their mental health and exposed children/adolescents to serious risks. Child-families should be supported by the relevant institutions in this process.
